What is Epsom salt?

Epsom salt is not the same as table salt. It is also known as magnesium sulfate and is made up of magnesium, sulfur, and oxygen. This combination has been shown to help relax the muscles, reduce inflammation, relieve cramps, reduce pain and swelling, decrease stress, and even help to relieve constipation. The magnesium and sulfate content may also support the detoxification process.

When used in a bath, the claims state that magnesium and sulfate can be absorbed via the skin. Most of the benefits reported are associated with the magnesium content. You may find your skin may become smoother and less rough however check with your health care provider if you suffer from skin conditions as it could potentially make it worse.

About 15 minutes is all it takes to start to feel and receive the benefits from an Epsom salt bath. Always use externally, avoid consuming internally as it may promote digestive discomfort. An Epsom salt bath is a great self-care tool to use when under stress or after a strenuous workout to reduce muscle tension and soreness.
